In Age of Empires 4, the English civilization is marked as one of the easiest civs to play as. Not only is it one of the most straightforward, but it also has stronger early game units and important bonuses that help it defend against attackers. Here’s everything you need to know about the English civilization in Age of Empires 4 at a glance.
Tips for Playing as the English Civilization
- England is very good at early expansion and their villagers aren’t as defenseless.
- Get those farms and mills up and running so you can spam build units earlier.
- Make sure to build a network of towers and outposts so you always get a buff when under attack.
- Feel free to spam Longbowman, but keep in mind that they really aren’t the best at sieging buildings and walls.
- You not only want a front line to defend them, but also to help get them into the next area with enemies.
- Don’t be afraid to play defensively and turtle until you can build your wonder. England is great if you build your town correctly.
English Bonuses
These are the main perks you receive when playing as England.
- Villagers construct farms for 50% less wood.
- Farms near mills gather 15% faster.
- Town centers, outposts, towers, and keeps give nearby units the Network of Castles buff which gives 25% more attack speed.
- Town centers fire twice as many arrows.
- Military ships have +1 range.
English Landmark Options
Which landmark you choose largely depends on what kind of game you’re playing. If you end up getting the research, which lets your Longbowman set up camp and heal, you can safely skip out on the Abbey of Kings and instead pump out archers at double the speed.
Age 2
- Council Hall – Produce Longbowman at 100% speed from the Landmark. Contains Longbowman upgrades.
- Abbey of Kings – Heals all nearby friendly units that are out of combat by four health every 1.5 seconds.
Age 3
- King’s Palace – Acts as a Town Center with all the behaviors, technology, units, and bonuses.
- The White Tower – Acts as a Keep with all the behaviors, technologies, and bonuses.
Age 4
- Berkshire Palace – Acts as a Keep with all the behaviors, technologies, and bonuses. Berkshire Palace has a 50% greater weapon range and double the number of arrow slits.
- Wynguard Palace – You can produce the Wynguard Army from this landmark. Each army includes one each of Man-at-War, Spearman, Longbowman, Knight, and Trebuchet.
English Unique Units
With so much power in the buildings and technologies of the English, they have very few unique units.
- Vanguard Man-at-Arms – Available one age earlier than everyone else.
- Longbowman – Cost-effective and quick to produce infantry with long-range and high damage against other unarmored infantry. Able to produce Palings to defend against cavalry.
English Unique Technologies
As you might stereotypically expect from a game like this, England is really good at building ships, gathering lots of archers, and empowering their trebuchets.
- Shipwrights – Reduces the cost of ships by 10%.
- Setup Camp – Unlocks the ability for Longbowman to set up camps, which heal them for one health every second.
- Arrow Volley – A unique ability of the Longbowman which, when activated, increases their attack speed by 70%.
- Shattering Projectiles – Upgrades your trebuchet projectiles to shatter on impact, affecting a larger area.
