How to Make Money in FFXIV

The best ways to make money in Final Fantasy XIV always change, but some things stay the same.

Has a shiny Final Fantasy XIV mount or minion caught your eye but you lack the gil to purchase it on the market board? Are you trying to find a way to finally finance an apartment or a brand new house in game? Fret not, because there’s a whole host of gil-making avenues that you can explore to achieve your goals.

Making money ultimately comes down to how much effort players wish to put into it. This guide won’t be an exhaustive list and will be broken down into three categories of gil-making: easy, intermediate, and hard. Remember that the easier the method of gil farming, the less gil it makes.

How to make money in FFXIV: Easy mode

Many of the gil-making strategies mentioned below have dedicated guides listed at the top of this guide, but if you are looking for a quick list to help you decide which method to use, here are some of the easier ways to make gil in FFXIV:

  • Retainers - Send out Retainers to gather materials to sell. For example, if you’re just starting out, have them farm Wind Shards at level 5 and crystals at level 26. Sell them in stacks of 500 to 1,000. Elemental based shards and crystals are always needed for crafting.
  • Blue Mage - Have a Blue Mage around level 70 to 80? Use it to solo farm Shadowbringer fates for Bicolor Gemstones. You can complete non-boss fates in minutes with spells like Ram's Voice and Ultravibration.
  • Island Sanctuary - Build up your sanctuary so you can farm weekly Vegetal Vouchers to sell on the market board with more purchase options.
  • Sacks of Nuts - Turn your Sacks of Nuts into Ronkan Rings at the vendor Xylle at (9.4, 9.5) in the Crystarium. The rings can be bought en masse for 25 nuts each and be turned into 1,621 grand company seals or outright gil.

  • Trials for Grand Company Seals - Farm unsynced Trials like Thok ast Thok extreme on a level 90 dps job which takes less than a minute  to complete. Pick up the boss loot which contains the weapon coffer and primal weapon. Change to a GLD/PLD to open your weapon coffer (producing both a sword and shield), and then turn in three total items for over 3,000 seals. Turn Grand Company Seals into gil by buying submarine materials such as Coke, Hardened Sap, Glass Fiber, etc.
  • Daily Duty Roulettes - Complete daily Roulettes in the Duty Finder. The amount of gil you receive per Roulette scales with job level, the level of the Duty compared to your job’s level, and the adventurer in need bonus. For example, if you complete all daily Roulettes on a level 90 combat job you will receive a base income of 55,560 gil but can expect to gain much more per day.
  • Doman Enclave - Remember to unlock the Doman Enclave Restoration with the Precious Reclamation quest line (which requires Post Stormblood MSQ and Doman Adventurer’s Guild side quests). The reconstruction relies on donations which, when donated, give twice as much as the item is worth. So if an item is worth 1,000 gil you will receive 2,000 gil in return. It is recommended to turn in Allagan Gil Pieces or Clear Demimateria III for a 100% profit. The donation budget will eventually allow you to receive up to 40,000 gil per week.
  • Challenge Log - Working on any of the tips above will help you complete portions of the Challenge Log weekly with easy sources like daily Roulettes, Retainer Ventures, the Gold Saucer, and FATE farming. If you complete 30 challenges, you will receive 55,000 gil per week as a base amount plus whatever extra that came from the individual challenges.

How to make money in FFXIV: Intermediate mode

As players venture further into the game they can find better avenues to make gil for their time. For this tier, it’s best to have at least one max level crafter and gatherer job if you’re not already set on becoming an omnicrafter. Gathering and crafting items outright to sell on the market board can be hit or miss as prices fluctuate, but remember to research them first before putting in the effort to farm and sell. Here are a few more ways that crafting and gathering can make you money.

  • Collectable Farming - Crafting Collectables with the intent of making gil will ultimately depend on where you’re at in each patch of the expansion. You’ll want to look at if White Crafters' Scrips are profitable for your time.
  • Desynthesis - Desynthing Collectables by gathering are always needed since the Aetherical Reduction produces the sand required for endgame crafting. You can expect to make mountains of gil at peak patch times when new craftable job sets come out by selling the sands outright.
  • Skybuilders' Scrips - Farming for your Firmament achievements with your crafter and gatherers? Spend your Skybuilder's Scrips by purchasing tradable glamour items or dyes to sell on the market board.
  • Levequests - Spend your Levequest allowances. You get six per day for a total of 180 per 30 days. If you focus on the best Levequests for gil turn-in you can expect to make around 60,000 gil per day or 1.8 million gil per month.
  • Treasure Maps - Check your timers page (ctrl+U) to see when your next map allowance is. A good map to steadily sell will be the Timeworn Gazelleskin Map due to it potentially dropping the untradable Timeworn Thief’s Map in its portal, which is sought out by achievement hunters in game.

How to make money in FFXIV: Hard mode

At this point in the game, making gil will take some planning and time. Players should be omnicrafters and gathers as well as having three chosen professions for specializations.

Saving gil by planning ahead

Plan ahead for upcoming patches by seeing when new craftable job gear will be released. Stock up on crafting and gathering food as well as any medicines beforehand to avoid buying them at inflated market prices. On the flip side, you can simply sell crafting and gathering food on the market board when new crafting patches drop to capitalize on those who didn’t plan ahead. Being ahead of the curve is where you can lock in your profits.

Buy Hi-Cordials from places like the Island Sanctuary or the Grand Company so you’re not resorting to buying weaker cordials on the market board. Stock up on Aetheryte Tickets — purchased with Allied Seals at your Grand Company’s Hunt Billmaster or with Centurio Seals from Ardolain at (13.0, 11.8) in the Foundation of Ishgard —  so you’re not having to spend gil when traveling from one gathering node to the next

Theorycrafting and the market board

Continue to capitalize on flipping items on the market baord when higher volume pushes prices lower. Check item categories like housing and other base expansion patch materials that typically will be used often in collectibles and crafted job gear. For example, the base patch materials of 6.0 in Endwalker like the AR-Caean Velvet was used in the Diadochos job gear which was released in 6.4. There is profit in theorycrafting which older materials will be used in the future and stocking up on them to sell.

Expert crafting

Expert crafting when it came to Endwalker was a profitable venture. While it is uncertain what Dawntrail and future expansions hold when it comes to expert crafting, it’s still worth it to consider. This type of craft can be difficult, and has heavy RNG factors which requires an expertly pentamelded crafting set that focuses mainly on control and CP. While the crafts make more gil at the start of new patches, it’s still fairly profitable when prices lower once you have everything set up. It was personally worth it in 6.5 to craft one Aetherial Arbor set and sell it for 13 million gil when the patch started.

How I personally made my gil

I have made most of my gil income in Endwalker through gathering, theorycrafting patch sales, expert crafting, flipping the market board, and selling submarine parts. This was hedged on timing, gambling the market board, and luck of low volume. From 6.3 to 6.55 I have made well over 800 million gil.
