So you’ve exited Vault 76 for the first time and stepped out into the wilds of Appalachia. This can be quite an intimidating moment, as Fallout 76’s world is brutal and unforgiving at times, especially for those who are brand new. If you want to survive this wasteland you’ll eventually need a hefty amount of caps to purchase various items from NPC vendors or players. Earned a variety of different ways, you’ll typically make caps by just completing quests or selling off items you don’t need. Thankfully, there’s a pretty painless and repeatable farming method to earn some caps and medical consumables.
Cap Farming Location & Method
For this farm, we recommend you are around Level 20 since you’ll need to make a lengthy journey. You can do this earlier, but you shouldn’t need a ton of caps until much later anyway. To start, you will need to venture to the Pioneer Scout Camp which is in the northern region of Appalachia. (See image above.) When you arrive, clear out the 3-4 ghouls roaming around the campsite. They’re relatively easy to deal with, especially if you have a shotgun or solid melee weapon. Once you’re done, speak to the Mr. Handy wandering around and ask to join the Pioneer Scouts.
Now don’t worry about completing the quest, it’s irrelevant to the actual farming method. You just need to have acquired the quest itself. From the camp, you’ll want to head east past the mountains and the railroad station. (See image below.) You’re looking for the Sunnytop Ski Lanes, which is a hotel that’s occupied by a gang of Super Mutants. These enemies aren’t pushovers, so if you can’t take them head-on try to sneak around the back of the lodge.

Once you get to the back, approach the intercom with the yellow flag next to it. Interacting with it will cause a mini-quest to trigger where you need to run down the mountain via the path indicated by the flags. The catch is the path is filled with traps, mines, turrets, and a small Super Mutant party at the bottom. Don’t worry about rushing through the path the first time. Instead, slowly descend along the determined route and trigger every trap and mine you find.
After everything is completely safe, run back up the mountain and interact with the intercom. Do not fast travel up the mountain, as it could reset all of the traps and Super Mutants. Instead, run up the mountain and then interact with the intercom. Once the voice tells you to run, book it down the hill and make sure to run through every marked set of yellow flags. If you follow the correct path you will earn 50 caps and a handful of helpful items like Stimpacks, Cryo Grenades, and RadAway. You can now repeat this process of running the course over and over again, each time earning 50 caps and some consumables.
While it’s not perfect for veteran players, this is a great method for early users who need a few hundred caps to purchase supplies like Bobby Pins or Stimpacks. Remember, if you fast travel there is a high chance everything will reset so only leave when you’re content with the amount of caps farmed.
