So you want to be the ultimate survivor and conquer the undead hordes in 7 Days to Die? Well, it’s easier said than done, as this zombie survival game will task you with everything from scavenging supplies to cooking food to completing quests to facing down all types of terrifying ghouls. Similar to games like Rust or The Forest, players will need to traverse the dense world for materials to build their base and gear. One of the most important crafting materials is Forged Iron, which is used to create a number of different useful items such as weapons, a cement mixer, and armor.

How to Craft Forged Iron

In order to craft an ingot of Forged Iron, you will need 12 Iron, 6 Clay, and a forge to smelt it in. Iron can be found either in black Iron deposits, purchased from one of the traders, or just looted from containers in buildings, airdrops, and vehicles. It’s a pretty common material, so there’s a good chance you’ll come across a lot of it — especially if you are near a city and scavenge often. As for Clay, this is obtained by just digging up the ground. You’ll also need a forge, which can only be built once you’ve unlocked the perk Advanced Engineering which is under the Intellect skill tree.

Once you have all the materials, put the Iron and Clay into the forge. You will then need to ignite the forge with either wood or coal, I suggest the latter if you’re just starting out since it’s a comically abundant resource. You will now need to wait 8 seconds for a single ingot of Forged Iron to be created. If you want multiples, you’ll need to keep adding the appropriate amount of Iron and Clay.

Alternatively, you can also get Forged Iron by finding it while looting chests, airdrops, or containers. However, this is much rarer and you should not rely on it as a method for obtaining Forged Iron. In my experience, I typically only find these at the end of treasure chest hunts or from heavily guarded, locked containers. These typically require you to use lockpicks to open them and you’ll usually get less than a dozen ingots. Instead, you should focus on crafting a forge and acquiring the needed materials.

While you will usually start with one forge, experienced players typically have multiple forges after the first week. This is because you’ll be building more advanced materials like bikes, cars, and weapons down the line; so being able to cut down on your wait time is key. I also suggest if you’re playing with others to have all your smelting supplies in a chest right by the forges. Being able to easily find what you need when crafting can alleviate a lot of headaches, so make sure to put up signs or build storage crates you can write on!
