If you were to boot up Baldur’s Gate 3 right now and engage in any of the game’s romances, just as things are getting hot and heavy you’ll be met with an extremely judgmental mind flayer staring through your monitor and deep into your soul. It’s because it knows what you’re here for. But just in front of the mind flayer’s disapproving gaze is “UNDER CONSTRUCTION” in big, yellow text. That’s because all the juicy bits of Baldur’s Gate 3’s romances are still in the works, as the game is still in Early Access.
Even as the game’s seventh big patch goes live, this is still the case. So while Larian Studios Founder and Baldur’s Gate 3 Director Swen Vincke demoed the latest update for all its UI overhauls and quality of life changes for press last week, I also got the chance to ask: when will my character and warlock Wyll be able to do the horizontal tango? When will a Githyanki player be able to help interspecies relations with Shadowheart by taking a diplomatic trip to pound town? How many patches until Astarion sucks something other than blood? Well, according to Vincke, it seems most probable that sexy times will have to wait until Baldur’s Gate 3 is launched in full, rather than any time during the Early Access phase.
“We still have quite some work on finishing the companions, which is where the romance scenes come into account,” Vincke told Fanbyte. “We still have a bunch of them to make. We’ve been experimenting, we’ve done a lot of stuff, and we still have some tweaks to do. So, I would imagine that most of them will come online on 1.0, because they will be ready late. In any case, there is going to come a point, that’s probably going to be in the last months heading [out of] Early Access where we’re not going to update anymore because we’re finishing. But we still have several patches planned for this year, so don’t misunderstand this. And I imagine that those will be kept for the end and for release. So the ‘work in progress’ screens will remain a little bit longer. There’s a lot of work going into it. There’s a lot of really cool work going into it. So I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.”

Baldur’s Gate 3’s latest patch is live now, and comes with some pretty substantial UI changes, which helps to add some clarity and ease of use to the RPG.
