FF7 Remake Limit Breaks Guide - How Limit Breaks Work in Final Fantasy 7

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a game filled with horrifying monsters, twisted abominations that are looking to make a meal out of Cloud and his golden hair. While there are a lot of powerful abilities at your disposal some of the best are Limit Breaks. These are designed to both reward players for Staggering enemies or give them a chance if you’re on the ropes during a tough battle. With every character possessing a different Limit Break and the game only vaguely explaining them, it can be tricky for new players to understand this mechanic right away.

Here’s everything you need to know about Limit Breaks in Final Fantasy 7 Remake:

How to Trigger a Limit Break

Limit Breaks are tied to the little yellow meter in the bottom right corner of each character’s stat bar. It will fill gradually over time, but this is extremely slow. To really make progress on your Limit Gauge you will need to either Stagger foes or receive damage. You’ll most likely build the meter up by taking damage since most enemies on Normal difficulty will be dead by the time you’ve staggered enough. However, once the move is available, you can access it by going through your battle menu and selecting Limit.

Doing so will cause a Party Member to unleash either a devastating attack or terrific support spell. These can be vital for turning the tide of battle or finishing off an annoying boss. Keep in mind, you will still need to position yourself by an enemy if you want to use a Limit Break such as Cloud’s Cross Slash. If you’re battling a mobile enemy that’s in the air, you can easily whiff this attack, so wait until an opportunity presents itself.

How to Unlock Limit Breaks

By default, every character has one Limit Break they can use. These are unlocked when you gain access to the character and are automatically equipped. However, players can earn an additional Limit Break for each of the four playable characters. This is done by participating in the Corneo Colosseum’s random matches following your victory over Hell House. Limit Breaks are one of the rewards that players can earn, which does make it worth investing your time into this side activity.

Alternatively, you can give a character a Limit Break by equipping the Focus Materia. This gives you a second Limit Break that splits your WTB gauge into three different segments. This is especially potent with either Aerith or Cloud, especially if you’ve been diligent about collecting weapon abilities. Having three bars increases Aerith’s healing output, while Cloud can continue to combo his attacks with a third bar. You will unlock this Materia once you gain Aerith as a Party Member.

Remember timing is everything so make sure not to waste them during a crucial fight otherwise you might be seeing the Game Over screen!
