Can LEGO Fortnite Be Played Split Screen?

Here's every way you can play with friends.

Since its launch in December 2023, the LEGO Fortnite game mode has offered one of the most chill ways to earn XP for your Fortnite Battle Pass. Similar to other survival crafting games, it's a mostly laidback experience that's fun to play with friends as you explore and build to your heart's content. As such, you might be tempted to try playing split-screen couch co-op. But is it even possible?

LEGO Fortnite Split Screen

Even though Fortnite: Battle Royale has split-screen options for Duos and Squads on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, no such feature exists for LEGO Fortnite. On launch day back in December, an official "Welcome to LEGO Fortnite" blog post addressed the topic as part of a FAQ. "Split-screen is currently not available in LEGO Fortnite," is all the post says on the matter. But why? It likely has everything to do with server issues.

When one fan asked about the status of split-screen on the LEGO Fortnite subreddit, another redditor had an astute observation: "The building restrictions and laggy mechanics are a server-side issue that will already cost them a lot of money in expanding servers to increase stability for a free game," they wrote. "Adding double the processing needed for a single instance of the game will never happen unless they find a huge way to streamline and optimize the physics and code base in the game."

Because split-screen co-op relies on a single instance of the game on one device, it would require a lot more processing power. The game mode is already a bit laggy as-is, which is likely why Epic Games never bothered trying to implement it in the first place.

How to Play LEGO Fortnite With Friends

LEGO Fortnite does feature co-op play across platforms for up to eight players in a single world. "It lets players welcome their pals into a community where they cooperate to build, explore caves and defeat powerful enemies," an official post from LEGO reads. If you've ever played the other Fortnite game modes with a friend, the process is identical.

All you have to do is enter the LEGO Fortnite game mode and invite your friends to the lobby. Then, you can create a new world together or select one you already made.

Once you've all loaded into the world, you can also give the other players access keys so that they can play on that world even when the original host is offline. Here's how to do that:

  • Open the menu and go to the Players tab
  • Select a friend from the list

How to Play LEGO Fortnite Couch Co-Op

While you cannot play LEGO Fortnite with friends via traditional split-screen co-op, it's definitely possible to play with multiple people in the same room and on the same network via crossplay. Fortnite and therefore LEGO Fortnite is available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Mac, PC, and Android mobile devices. You could have the host set up on a television via a console like PlayStation 5 and have another player load into the same world using the above process on their Nintendo Switch, smartphone, or laptop.
