One of the most stylish armor sets in the Final Fantasy XIV wardrobe, the Rathalos gear is part of the Monster Hunter collaboration event, and sees the Warrior of Light deck themselves out in fashion inspired by the iconic Rathalos armor from the Monster Hunter series. Unlocking the armor is a simple process though, and it requires completing The Great Hunt series of Trials.
This Trial was part of the Monster Hunter crossover event, but unlike many crossovers, remains in the game to this day. To unlock it, and the Rathalos gear, you’ll need to have completed the main story quest of Stormblood and be level 70. From there, it’s a small grind for your new Rathalos-inspired fashion.
How to get Rathalos Gear in FFXIV
You’ll first need to unlock The Great Hunt trial. To do this, as mentioned you’ll need to be level 70 and have completed the MSQ quest “Stormblood,” the final quest of the Stormblood expansion. Then head over to Kugane and speak to the Hearty Hunter NPC at X: 9.7, Y: 8.9 to pick up "The New King on the Block". Proceed through the quest and complete the Trial when it’s unlocked. As a reward, you’ll receive some Rathalos Scales. These are the currency you purchase the Rathalos Gear with.
Where to trade Rathalos Scales for Rathalos Armor
Once you’ve completed The Great Hunt once, the Smithy NPC will appear in Kugane at X: 9.7, Y: 8.9. They will sell Rathalos Gear [M] and Rathalos Gear [F]. The costs in Rathalos Scales are listed below.

- Rathalos Mail - 8 Rathalos Scales
- Rathalos Coil - 8 Rathalos Scales
- Rathalos Vambraces - 4 Rathalos Scales
- Rathalos Greaves - 4 Rathalos Scales
Rathalos Gear vs. Augmented Rathalos Gear
In addition to Rathalos Gear, the Smithy also sells Augmented Rathalos Gear. Unlike the base Rathalos Gear, this gear is dyeable, and therefore much more desirable. To purchase it, you’ll need to trade both a piece of regular Rathalos Armor, and a number of Rathalos Scale+ which are obtained from completing The Great Hunt (Extreme). The number of Rathalos Scale+ needed to obtain this gear differs from the amount of regular scales needed for the normal set.
How to unlock The Great Hunt (Extreme)
After you’ve completed "The New King on the Block", "The Newer King on the Block" quest will appear from the Hearty Hunter (Kugane, X: 9.7, Y: 8.9). After talking to him you’ll be able to unlock The Great Hunt (Extreme).
How to farm Rathalos Scales
Farming regular Rathalos Scales is fairly simple, and can be done in the Duty Finder by completing The Great Hunt. This can even be done unsynced with certain max level tank jobs. Rathalos Scale+ are a little more difficult as you need to complete The Great Hunt (Extreme). To do this, it’s suggested you create a party in Party Finder, and put out a call for people to either farm the Rathalos Mount or the gear. At the time of writing, there’s currently no way to solo The Great Hunt (Extreme).
