FFXIV Moogle Treasure Trove – October 2021 Irregular Tomestone Guide

Irregular Tomestones of Lore are an appropriate reward before the end of the current storyline.

The FFXIV Moogle Treasure Trove is back, this time with Irregular Tomestones of Lore, and ready to take us into Endwalker with the October 2021 version of the event. Well, I say “version,” but it’s quite similar to past iterations of the “catch-up” event Square Enix likes to drop before major patches. The patch this time is FFXIV 6.0 (a.k.a. the paid Endwalker expansion itself). And most of what’s changed for this 2021 Moogle Treasure Trove are the rewards — plus some of the ways you get them.

If you’re not the least bit familiar with the time-limited event, it’s mostly a way to reward players for catching up on the game, helping friends through old content, and just doing some stuff you ought to do anyway. All of which is tied to a single event currency: Irregular Tomestones of Lore. Completing certain dungeons, Trials, raids, and PVP encounters will award certain numbers of Tomestones. You can then take the currency to a dedicated NPC and trade them for prizes (such as the illustrious FFXIV Inferno Jacket).

The event runs from Oct. 19, 2021 “until the launch of Patch 6.0.” While the website technically mentions there is no set end date, that should be Nov. 23, 2021, or more likely Nov. 19, 2021 (when Endwalker launches for pre-order customers).

Every eligible event will be marked in your Duty Finder with an appropriate Moogle icon. So it shouldn’t be hard to find what you need! For posterity, though, here’s the full list from the FFXIV website and their associated rewards.

In addition to these PVE events that most players are probably familiar with, there are five PVP activities that also award Irregular Tomestones of Lore. Though these work a bit differently. PVP missions award three or five Moogle Tomestones — depending on whether your team wins or loses. You can probably guess that losses award the smaller number (three Irregular Tomestones) and wins award the higher one (five Irregular Tomestones).

These Moogle Treasure Trove activities are:

  • The Borderlands Ruins (PVP)
  • Seal Rock (PVP)
  • The Fields of Glory (PVP)
  • Onsal Hakair (PVP)
  • Hidden Gorge (PVP)

Once you have some Tomestones, you can head to Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks (x9.4, y11.6), Ul’dah’s Steps of Nald (x9.6, y9.1), or New Gridania (x12.4, y12.1) to purchase prizes from the Itinerant Moogle NPC. This time around, the prizes are mostly old cosmetics available in other ways. Though some are quite the pain to acquire normally or without a dedicated group.

The real standout reward, however, is the Inferno Jacket — so-called for the decal of Ifrit on the back. The varsity jacket design is a “glamour item,” meaning it has… basically zero gameplay value. It just looks sick as hell. You’re meant to drop it in your Glamour Dresser at one of the many inns scattered throughout FFXIV or otherwise apply it with a Glamour Prism. That way you can wear the “armor” over any existing top.

The Inferno Jacket is the most expensive item on the list, but well worth getting. The item has never been available in the west before now (and likely won’t be again for some time). It was a Mog Station (i.e. real money) exclusive in Asia for a number of years. So, you know… Get it while it’s hot.

You can find the full list of rewards on The Lodestone website. Though there are some other standouts. The Dark Lanner Whistle and Auspicious Kamuy Fife will get you mounts exclusive to some difficult Extreme Trials. The other whistles and horns on the list of rewards also unlock mounts. They’re just not as snazzy or hard to acquire, so ought to be low priorities.

The one exception might be the very flashy Bomb Palanquin Horn. Like several mounts in the event, this is tied to an early Beast Tribe quest — which are frankly a pain to complete for very little reward these days. Get this and you can skip acquiring it via the Kobold Beast Tribe.

Ostensibly Timeworn Maps, by comparison, might seem pricey at 30 Irregular Tomestones for two. But they’re an absolute steal. Each guarantees a treasure portal: presumably to The Dungeons of Lyhe Ghiah or The Shifting Oubliettes of Lyhe Ghiah. These are special, incredibly random group activities for level 80 players.

The rewards for each are pretty fantastic. You get scores of gil, plenty of Materia, and unique glamour crafting materials (that typically sell for scores of gil). Seriously, if you have a group to play with and aren’t already running treasure hunts… Well, you should start. And Ostensibly Timeworn Maps take at least some of the randomness out of the equation (the level of rewards are still pretty much a coin flip).

The remaining odds and ends aren’t terribly exciting. Nor are they exclusive to the event. The riding maps are good for the price. Beyond that it’s mostly a matter of personal preference (and your patience for running Praetorium).

Speaking of the world’s most-watched film, Praetorium is only really worth your time via the MSQ Duty Roulette. Despite dropping the most Irregular Tomestones of Lore, it simply takes too long to farm efficiently. The PVP missions are actually some of your best bets. Despite the stigma FFXIV players (including myself) often have against it. Syrcus Tower isn’t bad, either, as the quickest of the three Crystal Tower raids. Just make sure to grab the “Change of Arms” Relic Weapon quest to farm Loathsome Memories of the Dying while you’re at it. And at five Tomestones per clear, Amaurot is good for collecting desynth items along the way (if you play a healer or tank that can avoid long queues).

This is pretty much all you need to know about the Moogle Treasure Trove event for October 2021! Best of luck and get those Tomestones quick before Endwalker arrives.
