FFXIV How to Increase Mount Speed

Get around Eorzea quicker with these mount speed increases!

From the moment you get your Chocobo at level 20 in Final Fantasy XIV, the game speeds up, even if your mount’s speed doesn’t feel that fast. After a few levels, however, you’ll likely want to increase your mount’s speed to something that has you blazing across the zones at a pace more befitting of the Warrior of Light.

There are two main ways to increase your mount speed in FFXIV, and both methods and the ways to obtain these speed boosts are detailed. While initial speed boosts primarily come from the Main Scenario Quests, or MSQ, later boosts will need you to actively work to unlock them, usually through Hunts or Shared FATEs.

Mount Speed in FFXIV

Initially, when you first obtain a mount in FFXIV, your speed is minimal, especially in the zones in A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, and Stormblood. Once you pass certain Main Scenario Quest thresholds, your mount speed in particular areas will increase, for which you’ll receive an on-screen notification. After this, you must unlock Riding Maps to increase your mount speed.

There are two Mount Speed thresholds after the initial base mount speed — Enhancement I and Enhancement II. From the Shadowbringers expansion onwards, there are only two mount speeds: the base speed and Enhancement I. However, the base mount speed in Shadowbringers and beyond is as fast as Enhancement I in A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, and Stormblood, while Enhancement I is as fast as the original Enhancement II. It can be confusing, but you can view it as having a faster base speed in the later expansions.

How to increase Mount Speed in FFXIV

There are two ways to increase your mount speed in FFXIV. The first is through playing the Main Scenario. There is one Main Scenario Quest in A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, and Stormblood that increases your Mount Speed to Enhancement I. The second method is to purchase area Riding Maps. In A Realm RebornHeavensward, and Stormblood, you can buy these Riding Maps with Allied Seals or Centurio Seals, depending on the expansion. Shadowbringers and Endwalker's Riding Maps, however, require Bicolor Gemstones earned from Shared FATEs.

You can check your mount speed in an area with the "/mountspeed" command. Alternatively, you can navigate to the Travel Menu on your Menu Bar and select Mount Speed for the same information. Areas in A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, and Stormblood will have two stars representing Enhancement I and Enhancement II, while areas found in Shadowbringers and beyond only have a single star representing the improved Enhancement I.
