Players have earned and saved Legendary Shards in Destiny 2 to customize builds and purchase items from vendors. This currency is necessary, with almost equal importance to the common Glimmer. However, the time has come to bring your Legendary Shard collection to a halt.
In the TWID post, Bungie said that it will begin removing Legendary Shards in Season 23. Destiny 2 Economy team explained that there is a disparity in the amount of Legendary Shards players own. While some will never get close to running out of this currency, other players are scraping by.
Next season, players will no longer need Legendary Shards to purchase from the Monument to Lost Lights and for ritual gear focusing. "Starting in Season 23, non-Adept focusing will cost ritual engrams and Glimmer only. Focusing Adept weapons will still require seven wins in Trials Passages or Nightfall Ciphers," Bungie said.
The developer detailed the new costs of ritual, legacy, Iron Banner, Trials of Osiris, and Nightfall weapons in the blog post.
Starting in The Final Shape expansion, Legendary Shards will no longer exist in the game. Bungie detailed that it will remove the remaining bunch of Legendary Shard costs from the Collections tab, Trials Passages, ritual gear, and vendor purchases, too.
"And to be totally clear, we will not be offering a currency exchange for stockpiled Legendary Shards. The goal in removing Legendary Shards is to make Destiny 2 a more approachable and fair experience for all players. This is why we are not raising Glimmer prices for items or adding replacement costs to things that previously needed Legendary Shards," Bungie clarified.
When dismantling Legendary and Exotic gear, players will not earn Legendary Shards either. Instead, players obtain Glimmer, Gunsmith reputation, and possible Enhancement Core drops — Bungie listed the drop chance percentage in the blog post — based on gear type and rarity.
Although this isn't the first time Bungie has removed currencies and materials from the game, the team mentioned that this change will simplify the Destiny 2 economy.
