Bungie’s divorce from Activision Blizzard finalizes when Destiny 2‘s next big expansion, Shadowkeep, launches on October 1. The game is leaving Acti/Blizz’s Battle.net launcher for Steam, and in order to help the millions of Guardians out there beat the rush, Bungie has activated the transfer system weeks ahead of launch. This is all preemptive, mind you — all of your characters will stay exactly where they are until October 1. But! There’s no reason to not go ahead and link your accounts together, and even if you don’t plan on buying Shadowkeep, you still have to move to Steam to keep playing the base game. Here’s how to do it.
How to Link Your Destiny 2 Account with Steam
First thing’s first: click here. That link takes you directly to Bungie’s PC Move portal, where you’ll find the above trailer and a prompt that looks like this:
If you’ve already got a Bungie.net account, make sure you’re logged in, then skip to the next paragraph. If you don’t have a Bungie.net account, you’ll need to create one. Do that here. The process only takes a couple of minutes, and once you’re done you can close the window and click on the link from earlier to get back to the PC Move portal.
Next, click all up on that “Get Started” button. The site will then ask you to log in with your Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, or Battle.net account. Since we’re just moving from Battle.net to Steam, don’t worry about the Xbox Live or PlayStation Network options — these options are for people transferring save data from the console versions of Destiny 2. A new window will open and ask for your Battle.net credentials, even if you’re already logged into the Battle.net client on your PC. Make sure to have your authenticator handy!
You will then be redirected to a site showing which external accounts are linked to your Bungie.net profile. There should still be a red banner at the top of the page warning of the switch to Steam; click on this to return to the PC Move portal.
Once you’re back on the PC Move portal, click the Get Started button one more time. You should now be asked to log into your Steam account in another new pop-up window, which will, again, require authentication even if you’re already logged into the Steam client on your PC. Be aware! Your Battle.net account cannot be un-linked from whatever Steam account you log in with here, so make sure it’s definitely, 100 percent for suresies the Steam account that you want to play Destiny 2 on. You’ll then be shown a list of all the Destiny 2 licenses activated on your Battle.net account — mine looked like this:
Once you’ve clicked through those prompts, you’re all set!
Things to Know
Some players may find that their characters and Silver have transferred before all of their account’s licenses. Bungie advises those players to log in and out of Destiny 2 in order to force the rest of the transfer to go through.
Everything else about the Steam migration is pretty straightforward. Once October 1 rolls around, Destiny 2 will be available on Steam and disappear from Battle.net. The version of Destiny 2 that you’ll have access to will either be Shadowkeep, assuming you buy the new expansion, or New Light, which is Bungie’s new name for the base version of the game. It’s unclear whether these will be separate Steam entries, or one unified executable.
